- Using a Human-Centered Design Approach to Determine Consumer Preferences for Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets in Ghana
Through focus group discussions and human-centered design exercises, middle-class Ghanaians communicated the need to address convenience, comfort, and aesthetics when designing a bed net for their demographic. Illustrative attributes for consideration by private-sector manufacturers include a more convenient way to hang the net, a more attractive silhouette, and a zipper to provide ease of entry and exit while keeping the area sealed from mosquitos.

The new SumiShield 50WG insecticide, which possibly has longer duration of effectiveness than other indoor residual spray (IRS) formulations, has potential as an alternative IRS product for malaria vector control, particularly where resistance to other formulations has developed.
- Malaria Case Detection Among Mobile Populations and Migrant Workers in Myanmar: Comparison of 3 Service Delivery Approaches
In 3 regions of Myanmar, village malaria workers (VMWs) and mobile teams tested a higher number of people than strategically placed fixed screening points at border crossings, but VMWs and screening points yielded higher malaria positive rates. We recommend using a combination of these approaches in the Greater Mekong Subregion for such populations depending on the strategic approach of the program.
- Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets for Malaria Control in Myanmar and Nigeria: Lessons From the Past, Tools for the Future
While having saved many lives over the past decade, continued dependence on mass distribution of free long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is not sufficient and may not be sustainable. Programs must be enabled with flexible policy and technical options to place LLINs within a larger context of multisectoral partnerships and integrated vector management, avoiding what happened in the DDT era, where there was overreliance implementing a uniform solution to a complex problem.
- Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of a School Insecticide-Treated Net Distribution Program in Cross River State, Nigeria
Three years following a mass bed net distribution campaign, the addition of school-based distribution to antenatal care (ANC) distribution in Cross River State, Nigeria, increased household ownership of any net to nearly 80%, whereas ownership in the comparison area was below 50%. School distribution was nearly equitable among rich and poor, and very few households obtained nets from both ANC and schools, suggesting complementary reach.

Using health extension workers in Ethiopia as supervisors of the spray team reduced operational costs while maintaining quality. But rethinking IRS calls for (1) adapting equipment and procedures to ensure higher-quality spray applications, and (2) empowering decentralized targeting against malaria transmission foci.

Integrating indoor residual spraying into the institutionalized community-based health system in 5 districts was more efficient than the district-based model and did not compromise quality or compliance with environmental standards.
- Feasibility and Effectiveness of mHealth for Mobilizing Households for Indoor Residual Spraying to Prevent Malaria: A Case Study in Mali
Sending voice and/or text messages to mobilize households for spraying was more costly per structure and less effective at preparing structures than traditional door-to-door mobilization approaches supplemented with radio and town hall announcements. Challenges included:
Lack of familiarity with mobile phones and with public health mobile messaging
Lack of face-to-face communication with mobilizers, making it easier to ignore mobilization messages and preventing trust-building
Low literacy levels
Gender differentials in access to mobile phones
