A Special Issue on Integrating COVID-19 Vaccine into the Primary Health Care System: Lessons for Future Emergencies
Guest Editors: TBD
Global Health: Science and Practice (GHSP) invites papers for a special issue on strategies used to integrate COVID-19 vaccination services into the primary health care system.
Nearly 3 years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, it has posed unprecedented threats to health systems around the world. As part of the initial emergency response, COVID-19 specific funds were provided for targeted prevention services including vaccine distribution. As we enter 2023, governments worldwide are shifting away from provision of COVID-19 vaccines through emergency services to an integrated strategy by providing COVID-19 vaccines sustainably through routine health care services.
This special issue of GHSP aims to document strategies being undertaken to integrate COVID-19 vaccine provision into primary health care services, the risks and benefits of this integration, and lessons learned that could be applied to future health emergencies. Examples include but are not limited to integration of COVID-19 vaccines into services for polio, HIV/AIDS, Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), pregnancy-related care, as well as integration of systems such as data management, cold chain, and infodemic management. Papers should consider the impact of integration on health systems strengthening for future emergency preparedness.
Global Health: Science and Practice welcomes submissions of papers discussing any of these areas and from any geographical region, though priority will be placed on interventions that are most relevant to strengthening health systems in lower- and middle-income countries. While all types of submissions are welcome, we particularly encourage papers that have empirical (qualitative and quantitative) documentation of the design, execution, and impact of vaccine-related interventions. The supplement welcomes all formats including commentaries, case studies, short reports, and original articles.
