In March 2013, against the backdrop of persistent formidable global health challenges in achieving progress in child survival, maternal mortality, family planning, as well as the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases, Global Health: Science and Practice was launched. From the outset, the founding editors envisioned that GHSP would stand apart from other global health journals by focusing on the implementation of health programs and be used as a tool to help reach the ambitious health goals.
Formal research definitely helps. But it is not enough. We also need programmatic know-how, including experience-based knowledge and “lessons learned.” ... The key challenge for applying experiential knowledge is to find principles and lessons learned that are systematic, replicable, and applicable in other settings.
The editors also recognized the value in eliminating barriers to accessing this knowledge. In 2013, the number of open-access journals that were free to read was slowly increasing but still far below those requiring subscriptions. However, most of these open-access journals required authors or institutions to pay to publish their articles. GHSP sought to challenge the “business as usual” model.
We firmly believe that reducing barriers to accessing health information can speed up the pace of scientific discovery, encourage innovation, and, in many low- and middle-income countries, can even mean the difference between life and death. Thus, GHSP supports the open-access movement by making articles freely available to read, use, and distribute … and also by not charging authors article-processing fees to submit and publish their work with GHSP.
For the last 10 years, GHSP remained committed to this vision. GHSP provides a platform for global health practitioners, particularly those based in low- and middle-income countries, to publish practice-based evidence on the lessons learned from implementing programs under real-world conditions, in addition to the evidence-based practice typically reported in traditional peer-reviewed journals.
Throughout the year, we're taking this opportunity to reflect and celebrate, as well as explore what the future holds as we embark on a new decade of publishing. We invite you to celebrate with us.
