Thirty years have passed since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt, reshaped discussions on population and development, making them more human-centered and rooted in respect for human rights and environmental sustainability. During ICPD, the historic Programme of Action was adopted by 179 governments, affirming that sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is fundamental to human rights and highlighting the imperative to empower women and girls. At the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development held from April 29 to May 3, 2024, the Commission assessed the status of implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda.
This GHSP ICPD30 Special Collection recognizes 30 years of ICPD achievements, reflecting on successes and lessons learned that have shaped family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) programming and SRH outcomes for countries, regions, and worldwide. The articles in the collection also look ahead to emerging challenges, opportunities, and next steps needed to further advance and improve upon gains made since ICPD. In April 2024, GHSP issued a call for papers responding to this theme. Articles will be added to this collection here as they are published.
